Well, well, well. Someone else with a "HOT" Truck. I had a '78 that was a hate/hate relationship. It hated me and I hated it! We had a couple of under dash fires, and it left me stranded in the worst places! (I'm probably the only man left in North America without a cell phone). Quite the electrical bug and I did the same thing, put a couple of hundred into all new ELECTRICAL ANYTHING! If it had a current going through it, it was new. Battery, distributer, coil, wires, plugs, alternator, ignition switch, dimmer switch on the floor ($2.95) I replaced it all. And still had problems. Once you get an electrical gremlin, its a pain I don't wish on anyone. BUT, there may be hope if you haven't done this yet, it solve... MOST of my trucks problems and the kid I sold it to two years ago still drives it and hasn't had a problem! So I must have tracked it down.
The plug-in on the fire wall, where the inside wiring harness and engine compartment wiring harness connect? That's for convenience, I found the little clips that hold the engine compartment wiring harness up there at the firewall, were a little loose. Not enought to notice off hand, but enough to cause a lot of arcing. You get a spark arcing at 3500 degrees, and wiring insulation and stuff start to melt off wires, and fires pop up at the worst times and worst places. Once I tracked that down (6-8 months, $300-$400 later) I cut things and hard wired them together through the firewall. I have no idea if this is where your problem lies, but if you can learn something that might help you from my frustration, Best of luck to you!!
