Distributor points and dwell

I've never set points or dwell or any performed any kind of timing issues like that required on a power wagon. Can someone teach me how to do this so I can tune it after my first crank since my project started. I bought a feeler gauge but have no idea how to use it. My timing is off a bit and I'm ready to get it running really good.
