But as rods get sloppy enough so the piston hits the head, maybe it hits hard enough to lift the head off the block, making for leakinesss?

One of the problems of long stroke engines is that the long oil galleys in the crank, from the mains to the middle 4 rods, act as centrifugal oil pumps. They suck all the oil out of the block galleys, not leaving enough for the end two. That is why some hop-uppers actually tapped those four center galleys for allen headed set screws, then drilled the screws to a smaller size.
Another mod is if the mains only have oil slots in the upper half, get two sets of mains, use uppers in both top and bottom.
Would this phenomenon show on the oil gauge? Too bad that when we rev them up to 5000 we usually have other stuff to grab our attention...
But maybe, if true, it could be fixed by adding plumbing to the outside of the block? Two lines from the center plug of the side galley to the end plugs ??
