End Gaskets, LONG?

I've seen the tip that says "DO NOT TO CUT THE END GASKETS, LEAVE THEM LONG."

Should the extra part of the end gasket fold underneath the side gaskets? So they overlap? Doesn't this create a problem with sealing?
