They're cut to the right length as supplied. It doesn't look right, but they compress considerably end-wise when installed. I would not use any kind of adhesive on the end gaskets because that would keep them from compressing evenly when squeezed from the ends. Of course tiny oil leaks don't bother me. I suppose if a guy had to be able to eat off the garage floor, the only way to ensure no leaks is to dope everything up with RTV, which is basically how they put cars together nowadays -- very few gaskets, and just RTV on everything.
