Good story. At least this fellow was willing to believe you and to learn. You can't blame a guy for not knowing something if nobody's ever told him. I bet you hear a lot of that "but I just had it serviced", and "but I just put $XXX into it" as if a car was a jukebox and maintaining it was just a matter of putting money in the slot regularly.
I think my favorite in the "smart but dumb" department was when I was in engineering school and one of the professors brought in a radio from home and asked the lab technician to fix it. The guy's a professor of electrical engineering and he can't fix a radio?
