Engine rebuild

My '48 is tired and needs a rebuild I've
been told it's best to have the intake ports machined and polished, with a regular rebuild, mains etc. Along with a special cam (I don't know figures) inorder to get the longest usage and max. output from this engine. Usage involves light work, off roading and casual driving with
11.00 x 16.
I need expierience to guide me.
