Well, let's see. Sure, the flathead in itself is one thing, but what about everything that is bolted onto the engine? From my limited experience, it has been far easier finding these associated parts for a slant six in a 1967 Dodge Dart than it is for the like parts on a flathead six for a 1951 B3PW: Distributor, and its cap, rotor and points. The carburetor, and or its rebuild kit. The primary and secondary ignition parts. Valve cover gasket. Water and oil and fuel pumps. 12 volt starter and generator. Voltage regualtor. Of course, some of these are easier to get than others!
The rebuild kit for my B&B carburetor on the B3PW was only partially correct, and took several days to get. Valve cover gaskets for the 230 weren't available in my area at all, but were through Vintage Power Wagons.
This is not to say that the local Autozone is going to have everything I need to make a challenging road-side repair job on a mid-sixties slant six! I'm not implying that at all. The idea is that if I am stuck in Podunk and there is only an Autozone, then the chances of me getting the repair parts for a slant-six (and all of its supporting components) is greater than getting the above mentioned parts for my stock 230 flathead.
