I like geothermal. Very efficient but expensive to install. Plus side is no backup heat needed and there are still tax credits (I think) that help take the sting out of the system.
Mini-splits are nice but in PA you're probably too far north to really be efficient in the worst of winter, at which point you'd still need a secondary heat source.
My dual-fuel (heat pump with gas furnace) swtiches over at 40 degrees. In VA that's not as common as in PA.
As others have said, insulation and sealing any air leaks is the biggest return on investment you can make long term.
