We have changed all of our homes windows to Marvin double-hung insulated glass, wood interior, aluminum clad exterior, windows with double hung storm screen combinations. This gives us three panes of glass between us and the elements during cold months with the benefit of full air flow with no chance of rain infiltration during warm months. Also have used R-38 insulation in the attic trusses during our remodeling and have replaced side-by side sliding glass doors with 13-inch thick fully insulated walls in the windward side of the house. Another improvement has been the addition of 3/4" thick hardwood flooring above 1-1/2 inches of insulation above the concrete basement floor in the family room.
All of this was bought on sale or at auction and installed by us - so no labor costs. It did not take long to offset the materials cost in energy savings.
