There seems to be an idea around about the purity of steel, let me start off by saying there is NO such beast, steel is an alloy of many differing elements to gain certain properties for whatever the steel is going to be used for. there are types of steel that are very hard to build any hardness into, water pipe for one, it is steel, but you wouldn't want a knife blade made from it! on the other hand there are steels that are equeally hard to make soft enough to work cold. there is every thing in between for hardness, workablity, toughness, wearabilty, hardness, and on and on. iron is one of those things that can be PURE iron. cast iron has lots of carbon, thats why it's brittle, other alloys make it tough(nickel). as to the question of whether or not steel alloyed from virgin ores is any better than steel made from scrap steel, the anwser is no, it is not. if all steel was made from virgin ores, let me assure you, we could not afford to buy anything made of steel. and just thinking about it, guess where all that scrap steel went to that was collected during the war for the war effort, it built the dodges we love so dearly. some processes make better steel than others, an electric furnace will make steel that is 500% better than a blast furnace can make on its best days. during the time we are talking about there were many,many blast furnaces still in operation. maybe thats what the jeeps were? (ha-ha) but the manufactor still holds the key as to the quality of the steel used, I am sure that Chrysler had pretty stringent standards, and stuck to them, which is key to making a good product. if the steel used is wrong for the application it will cause many problems.
