I don't think any experts advise draining a lead-acid battery all the way down. 50% is considered safe. You might have read something like that about nicad batteries. They're very different; for example they can be stored discharged forever with no damage, but if you typically only use say 10% of their capacity they'll "take a set" and after a while that's all they'll hold. If you drain a lead acid battery 100%, both sets of plates become chemically identical, the electrolyte becomes pure water, and no matter how long and hard you try to charge it, nothing will happen.
