The problem with most deep cycle batteries is that they were not designed for the heavy current drain caused by cranking. They are designed for light to moderate loads that nearly drain them over a long period of time.
I've seen deep cycle batteries ruined within a short time when used for cranking engines.
No doubt there are hybrids of the two that are the best of both worlds, but be careful with assumptions that deep cycle batteries can be used for cranking engines.
