Jump starting 6 volt using a 12 volt

On a 6 volt, positive battery post is the ground, system, can you use a 12 volt system to jump start the 6 volt? I have been told you can do this, but I have also been told the six volt system carries more amperage than the 12 volt. The six volt has a generator, if I can do it without exploding a battery or damaging any other components, I will be using my diesel with a 140 amp (with proper voltage reg.) alt to boost the six volt.
How do you connect the cables, which are about two guage wire, so they will carry the current. Do you connect positive cable on the 12 v. to the positive post on the 6 v. even though that is the 6 v. ground post? I have seen it done this way, 12 v. to 6 v. Or do you connect the positive 12 v. to the negative post on the 6 v?
Or should I just remove the 6 v. battery and take it to a garage and have it charged? I have a large wheeled 12 volt battery charger, with 200 amp start, but it is not for 6 volt, it just says for 12 volt batteries. As always, many thanks in advance.
