Many 6v owners give up finding mechanical voltage regulators and go to electronics ones. Putting 12v into them can and will fry them. The older relay style is better at surviving this kind of abuse, though sometimes a lightweight unit will burn out.
If this is an issue that comes up, do what I did. I squirreled an extra battery in one of my trucks, lept it charged monthly, and used it as a booster if needed. Just offloaded it, and hooked up the cables. A pain, but safer. Better yet is dual batteries, though most "purists" don't want to do that if their truck originally did not come with dual batteries.
