Depends on your location and what wood you are dealing with I guess. I heard people say the split everything by hand but I have a stack of 2 ft elm I'd be willing to let someone try. Your maul will penetrate about 1/4 inch and that is it. Wedges are hard to start because they just bounce out. far easier to noodle them if you don't have a hydraulic splitter. You'll beat your brains out.

I agree SOME are easier but to say all, is stretching it.
