Just for fun, when you have a really gnarly chunk and don't want to be defeated by it (plus the knots burn really well so it's a shame to waste them), get out the auger and drill about a fair sized hole (1/2 to 3/4") down the middle of it, stopping a couple inches from the bottom, put in a piece of fuse, fill it within a couple inches of the top with the cheapest old gunpowder you've got laying around, stem it with dirt tightly packed into the top. Then, as they say on the fireworks, "light fuse. get away." Keep an eye on where the chunks land in the bushes so you can retrieve them.
