The wire is good. the s-6 is high silicon to prevent spatter usually the most expensive. The gas mix is for long arc for high production welding. I would like to know what tips they set you up with. I suspected you were running a gas mix from your bead shape, but you had some spatter on some beads maybe from high voltage.
What I have seen from most welding reps is they will sell you the top end consumables because that is where the money is.
I would stay with the s-6 wire and go to straight co2 and short arc tips for most fabrication work, that will give you the best results and save you some money.
