Hydroboost, powered by the power steering pump came on the scene many years ago. It provides much more foot force amplification to the Master Cylinder than a vacuum booster. The Hydroboost has a better pedal feel. Large vacuum boosters provide decent braking but may 'feel' to light to the foot touch. Hydroboost does not have this fault, rather a nice pedal feel. I dont agree that Hydroboost suffer hydraulic problems. Many guys are going to pick and pull yards, getting old hydroboost for conversions. They hold up well. However, I would never get one from a junk yard. Consider this, if Vacuum Boosters worked so well, why are hydroboost found on new vheicles ? I can provide you with NAPA numbers to buy a new Hydroboost system. Hydroboost unit $147, Master Cylinder $47, Misc Chevy parts $50 then add a few hyrdaulic hoses and your good to go.
