Normally when the pump fails, waters leaks from the bottom housing hole. Drain a little coolant from the radiator till you can see the tubes of the radiator core. Look for scale and rust buildup in the tubes, if present you may want to have the radiator hot tanked by a radiator shop. If it's a steady climb to high temperature, it could be a headgasket gone bad. If all of a of a sudden it gets hot while driving, I would suspect the thermostat.
