Someplace in the time from 68 to 72 the US automakers definitely changed product line seriously. I have a 68 Fury 3 that is pure monster. My 72 Duster was pure dung. Seems like all the manufacturers downsized in the time frame as well, first incarnation of small cars and redesignation of midsize cars as full size.
I seem to recall there were a boatload of smission systems added then as well. US manufacturers were also beginning to feel competition from Europe and Japan as well.
