As I recall, smog controls took effect right about the same time as the Arab oil embargo (1972?). That was the end of muscle cars. For the first 10 years, "smogged" vehicles had loads of problems because all the smog equipment was added onto existing engines and detracted from performance and was hard to work on. I will never work on a vacuum-powered smog system again. Fortunately most of those rigs (~1978-~1988) are gone now.
Around the same time, Japanese cars started getting taken seriously. I remember when a car lot opened up across from our high school (~1976?) with a big sign that said "Honda Car $1395". People thought a Honda CAR was kind of a weird thing. What is it, two motorcycles stuck together? A skateboard with a lawnmower motor? Nobody's laughing now.
