I must admitt David, I've never been to China to witness any of their shipyards. I only see the end result when it comes to our shipyard for anual painting & in general, their barges are built as well as ours.
Believe me...I don't like the fact that these huge contracts have been lost to foreign countries...unfortunately it's just the way it is & it won't be changing anytime soon.
Yes, you have the Jones Act & for the time being, that helps your Marine industry but those days are numbered too...don't kid yourself. Some day soon, a day will come when like everything else...clothing, shoes, cars, bikes, dog food...how much longer do you think Ship Building will be exempt?
In the coming years, more & more manufacturing jobs will be lost to foreign countries....particularly ones with poor safety practices, limited environmental concerns & low, low labor costs.
That's just the facts.
I wish I could change it but change comes at a price. Tax Import from China & China will Tax Imports from here.
Bottom line....we can't compete...for whatever reason & it won't be changing anytime soon.
