The picture of the tach I have posted above is one that I searched for a long time to find. I could have gone to the local parts emporium and bought a fancy new chrome one that would look great on a new car but would not look right in my POS Power Wagon. I think Neil is trying for the same effect. There is nothing shiny in his car, the chrome has dulled to a nickle appearance. Maybe back in the 30s they did do some nickle platinf in cars, I dont know. All I do know is that a chrome turn signal switch in his car would stand out like a fart in church!
