Update on overcharging. This is on a '48 B-1-PW.
I have isolated the system to battery, starter, generator, voltage regulator, ammeter, push-pull switch. I have 2 new wires from the generator to the voltage reg. and new wire from the volt reg (batt term) to the ammeter. No horn connected. The ammeter is wired to the new push-pull switch and then to the 6 volt coil. The coil is about 3 years old. The wires from the coil to the distrib. are new recently. I also replaced both battery cables to make sure good contact. I also ran a ground wire from the mounting screw of the voltage reg. ( mounted to the firewall) just to make sure the voltage regulator/cab was grounded to the frame/engine. I don't have a grounding strap from cab to frame but should be grounded by the cab mounting bolts originally.
Basically, this takes all lights, fuel guage and the key switch out of the system. I started it in the dark, moved all the wires and no visible signs of a short.
I could suspect the ammeter but its correctly shows overcharge as confirmed by battery water "boiling".
Battery voltage is 7.14 volts before starting, 7.56 at idle and then at high rpm, jumps to over 8 volts. Ammeter shows 35 amps.
Maybe the new voltage reg. is bad??? It is a 45 amp, 6 volt pos or neg ground.
I thought sure I would find the problem in the lights. Any ideas?
