Anybody ever rebuilt a Carter fuel pump? Until today, I didn't even know Carter made fuel pumps. It's off a 230, and I know I could get another pump to fit, but I already ordered the rebuild kit for it. I have been trying and trying to get the diaphragm rod off of the hook at the end of the lever, and I absolutely can't get it loose. Usually, they're pretty easy to unhook, and somewhat trickier to re-hook. I've rebuilt a lot of fuel pumps and I thought I had the touch, but this one has me stumped. Is there a trick to it? Does it have to twist or push in a strange direction? I can't see in there from the engine end to see what's going on at the hook end.
The other thing is the check valves are held in by what appear to be tightly-pressed in brass bushings, one per valve. I already destroyed the disk of one valve trying to hammer it out with a screw driver (I hope the kit has these parts). There's no indication that the bushing screws in, and no other way to get the valve apart. I think I may need to make a special tool with three prongs on the end to press it out in a bearing press. Is there a better way?
Thanks!
