It's a throw away world

So many of us would really prefer to be able to buy and use quality tools and we become quite frustrated when all that is available is junk.
Today I took my old Skil worm drive saw that I bought used for $35.00 in 1962, to an authorized Skil repair center. The saw has been leaking gear oil for years and I thought I could get a new seal for it. Now this saw has cut studs, headers, rafters, siding, etc. for over 60 houses since I have owned it. The repair guy politely chuckled and said "No way we are going to have a seal for that saw". And to follow up, "You can buy a brand new saw for $160". Now first of all, the seal, if available, should only cost about $3-$5.00. Secondly, I have bought several of the "new" worm drive saws for my sons over the years, and none of them lasts more than a couple of years. I can't stand to throw that old friend away. I'll keep it on the shelf and fill it with oil whenever I want to use it. No wonder the country is in a mess. Let's keep patching up those old Power Wagons as long as possible, and support the industry that is providing parts to keep them going, whether mechanically or cosmetically. Forgive the rant. JH
