I don't know of any shortcuts. The one thing I've learned is if it doesn't start quickly, prime it from a gas can or give it a shot of ether before your run the battery down. And learn the quirks of each truck -- how much choke it likes, how much cranking it usually takes, whether you should pump the throttle to prime it or that will flood it, whether it tends to get a damp distributor cap or corroded breaker points when it's sat for a long time, etc.
I too would like to know what's wrong with pushing in the clutch. It seems to me that can only help.
