That was common with smaller airplanes, but with the bigger ones like the DC 3 with large radial engines, the oil tank holds around 18 gallons. The ones equiped for cold weather operations has a diluter valve that pumped gas into the return line from the scavange pump and into the oil tank. I know that other military equipment like tanks and trucks used the same concept, but I don't know if it was built in like the airplanes.
I'll bet it did cause a fire or two over the years, but it works.
