Many years ago, our amateur radio club was given a monster generator from the government as part of the MARS program. It was a single cylinder diesel with a horizontal crank. Piston was about 1 1/2 times the size of of a #10 tin can, with a super heavy cast iron flywheel maybe 5' in diameter. We had it moved out to a farm to see if it would start. There was no starter as such. The generator was meant to be run as a motor from an alternate power source (if you needed an alternate power source to start the thing, why the heck do you need a generator?). Anyway, we used the PTO off a farm tractor with a flat belt as a starter. It finally did start, but without any muffler, it was like a canon shot about every half second. We only ran it about 5 minutes - that's all we could stand! It's probably still sitting along side that barn.
