I put all part in plastic bags as they come off the truck. Obviously I label everything quite well. As Marty said, if you send parts out or take them out of the bag to do cleaning you need to note on paper what goes where. I have noted on paper what is in each plastic bag and put that piece of paper in the plastic bag as I take the parts out for cleaning, plating or painting.
That is all I ever do. I do not take notes on what came off first and etc and do not take many pictures. I have had no problems getting things back together correctly even after many years. However, I seem to have a very good memory in that area.
