I bent my far share of sheetmetal on the old M, that first one left a mark. I looked at building some sliders instead of reinforcing the boards. In the end, I think I solved the problem...... A friend recently retired a true trail M37, 318/modified chevy tbi - it always ran perfect void a chafed wire issue. Poor ole heavy truck. Another friend runs a q-jet on his "trail" (cough cough) truck. He's even wishing he had FI when he gets to bouncing and before things go "boom".
That Projection always seems to be so hit or miss. Have one friend that tossed his after 6 months and another that has never had a problem. The higher end Edlebrock ProFlo (MPI) seems to be the cats meow when it comes to after market but is super spendy. Q-jets seem to be the best offroad but the old electric fuel pump only gets you so far...then some don't push it that far. IMHO, no carb will get you throttle control when you really need it. I have seen the Carl Buckingham's WC-11-T3 (q-jet with electric pump) not start after stallling on a excessive grade, needing a pull to flatter ground. He's hoping to MPFI the WC-11-T3 in the future, he's not afraid to evolve. I think propane works great as long as you you have enough tanks for the weekend and/or a source nearby. I know there is a trend with the hardcore (mostly western) guys are getting away from it due to it being harder to find in some locations.
You got a cool truck. You have made some major modifications that keep it looking original (maybe too much for the purist but it's your truck) but it will outperform any original. Looks like you are having a lot of fun with it which is what it is all about. Interested to see how it evolves in the future as you do good work.
