Allen- I have used the 6.2/6.5 engine in my trucks for years and have had nothing but good experiances. After talking to many people who have complained about this engine, I find that most of them treated like it was gasser and not a diesel. I even found that most GM service centers also treated them like they were gassers. The biggest thing to remember about these engines is that they have a indirect injection system of fuel delivery. They have pre-combustion chambers (called the Ricardo Comet V) where the fuel and air are allowed to swirl/mix together before entering the combustion process. This does wonders for fuel economy. You can expect 18 to 21 mpg highway. The only downfall to indirect injection is it produces lots of heat. The cooling system in these truck has the capacity to deal with this though. As long as the cooling system is cared for it will shed the excess heat. Just follow a maintenace schedule and this engine will see 300,000 miles. The 1997 model year even added a 130 gallon per minute water pump.
Someone earlier in this posting mentioned broken crankshafts. All diesels experiance higher vibrations than their gas counterparts. The harmonic balancer on these engines was designed to last 100,000 miles and then replaced. Most people who are used to gas engines do not think to replace these. There are 200,000 mile dampers out there as well made by Fluidamper. A problem that is not as frequent but does come up with the electronic injection pumps (1994-2000) is a fried pump mounted fuel module. The module gets very hot because of the electronics in it, sometimes it dies pre-maturely. A simple fix is to remove the module from the pump and fix it to a thick piece of aluminum somewhere in the engine compartment. This is the only engine that the HUMMVEE ever had. I have a 1996 model year 6.5 turbo diesel producing 275 hp. There are even 400 hp versions for marine purposes out there. Hope this helps. If you Allen or anyone else for that matter has questions about these engines I'd be happy to try and answer them. Sorry all you 4BTA heads out there but I think the non-turbo 6.2 litre would make an excellent diesel repower as well at least for an M-37. -Mac
