Your statement that an industrial engine could be used in an automotive situation is not 100% correct. The torque curves and horsepower ratings for an industrial engine will be very different then an automotive application.
The industrial engine is designed to run at say 1,200 rpm 24/7. That is where the most torque and horsepower will be created. As soon as that engine goes above/below 1,200 rpm, those numbers will most likely drop dramatically. This would not be ideal in an automobile.
