Welding PW Frame?

I was just checking out Ken & Linda's outstanding PW page.

My hat is off to them for such nice work!

Here's my question:

I noticed that Ken elected to weld together the nested pieces of the Power Wagon frame.

Is this really necessary?

I would think it would obviously increase strength, but given the history of the toughness of the truck, why do it????
