Differenial picture, question

I have 3 different differentials that have this chewed up pattern in the carrier case. My guess is it is from the pinion nut backing off and allowing the pinion gear to move back and hit the carrier, grinding in the grooves. But, they are all so uniform. Anyone have any insight on these marks? If they were from the pinion it must have made a god awful noise!
