Obviously the pinion was moving back and forth. Must have made a lot of noise going down the road. I can't imagine the clunk as they accerated or decenerated and the pininon banged into the carrier or pulled back from it. There had to be a lot of slop in that drive line from this problem. What did the bearing look like? Or did the keeper nut on the front end of the pinion back off which allowed the bearings to move back and forth.
