6 volt coil getting real hot ?

put in new coil ran for ten minutes and died. no spark now. coil got real hot. when you crank the engine over the coil get hot. i got an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system. the preveous owner ran it fine with an 8 volt battery. the coil has electrical tap between it and the mounting ring because it will slide out. could anybody help me out. dave
