Vacuum method of Ignition Timing (318 V8)

Tried the vacuum aproach to ignition timing on a 74 318V8 over the weekend. When I used the vacuum aproach, it put me at about 15BTDC. Depending on the book I check, it should be either right at TDC, or 5BTDC. I compromised at 10BTDC as I don't like the idea of being more than 4-5 degrees from where it should be. Is this about normal for a 318 with electronic ignition and no smog equipment?
