"Cummins Shop Manual B Series 3.9 and 5.9 L engines
Cylinder Head, Section 2-14
The Cylinder Head Cap Screws 'MUST' be tightened by using the three-step "torque plus angle' method.
Lubricate the threads and underside of the Capscrew head of the cylinder head capscrews with clean lubricating engine oil
Without Torque Angle Gauge/3/4" drive Part Number 3823878 Use following;
Step 1. Follow the number sequence and tighten all 26 cap screws to 66 ft/lbs
Step 2. Follow the number sequence and tighten the six long capscrews ONLY to 89 ft/lbs
Step 3. Retighten the short capscrews to 66 ft/lbs due to cylinder head relaxation
Step 4. Repeat Step 2 because of cylinder head relaxation to 89 ft/lbs
Step 5. Follow the number ssequence and turn all cap screws 90 degrees as indiacated on the cap screw head
With Torque Angle Gauge 3/4 " drive PN 3823878
To turn the capscrew to the desired angle accurately, align the capscrew with the small 'dot' and 'window' that are marked on the capscrew head."
