they use a similar technique on many newer engines. Some have 'stretch' bolts that are a precise length and bottom out in the block- a real pain when the head has been milled. These bolts must be discarded since they may have made mettalurgical changes as they age, and won't stretch to design . Good old 'torque em to 2 grunts and a fart' will allow for the changes on old bolts, so you don't have to discard them.
