OT: What kind of garage heater?

I'm looking to get a 'salamander' type heater. At least that's what we called them when I worked construction around here. It's the kind that has a burner in a tube/pipe above the fuel tank. Anyway, i've seen them advertised either using propane or kerosene. Are there any pros/cons to either type of fuel, and is one brand pretty much the same as the next? I will stay away from the offshore brands if we (USA) make any. I'm only having to heat 500 sq. ft. Thanks for the answers in advance.
