I'm in the same boat, especially since it was about 18 degrees this morning, and going lower.
I was looking for something that would heat the garage and didn't have flames, in case I wanted to paint. So an external forced air furnace would work well. One of the things I came across was a salamander type heater that the contractors around here are using.
Made by Universal Diesel Indirect Fired Forced Air Heater Model K150-FAI. The fire box is seperate from the air chamber, and it has a chimney, so you don't get the odor or soot like a regular salamander. You can set it up outside and blow warm in thru a duct, or set it up inside and pipe the exhaust outside. They are expensive at about $1,300, but for contarctors they are good, because they are portable.
They are a lot bigger than the usual salamander, they come in two sizes, and the larger one looks like a small jet engine.
We can get propane around here too, but that has its own problems when it gets cold.
