Us old hot rodders used to run our coils mounted verticaly, upside down. The theory is (was?) that the primary windings are at or near the top of the coil, inverting it kept that portion of the coil fully emersed in the oil because early manufacturers did not or could not fill the coil housing completely full of oil. Don't know if that is true or an old wifes tale, but inverted, verticle coiled motors ran faster!
