Men did lots of things like that in the old days. They welded lead with an acetylene torch, boiling off clouds of lead fumes. They went into pulp digesters without any outside air. They blew asbestos all over the insides of ships. They sprayed lead arsenate on apple orchards till the trees were white with it. They did most of this with no respirator or protective clothing. They are also mostly dead now.
