502 big block in 1988 GM suburban

I am seriously considering buying a 1988 Suburban with a nicely installed 502 ci GM crate engine. It is the towing version with 512 ft/lbs of torque and 300-some horsepower. Does anyone have any experience with this engine used in a towing application? Also, have any of you done towing with a Suburban? I won't tow more than 8000 lbs or so, I can use my brother's 1-ton pickup to tow heavier things. This truck is a half-ton right now, but I think I would swap in a 14-bolt rear and eight lug front hubs eventually. In your opinions, will this be a good multipurpose vehicle for towing and hauling?
