Without full contact against the ring, in certain types of sidewall flex, the ring could become a missle. I bet Mike can remember the "don't do this" split rim training videos of headless tirechangers. Or in this case, headless bystanders who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It's not worth the couple of bucks saved to take a chance on possibly killing or injuring someone.
