That 'sidewall indentation' that he suggests is there to retain the ring is actually a 'rim protector', and while it won't work as well if not a good match to the wheel, won't cause the tire to blow of the rim, especially if the rim protector is for a wider rim. The only insidence where the author could be correct is running a 7.50 tire with a rim protector for a narrower rim on a 6.5 rim, in which the rim protector would push outward on the ring, just as if the tire had no rim protector. The split ring is locked to the wheel by the I.D. of the steel wound bead, not by a section of un-reinforced rubber.
Here is some quotes:
.... Rim protection, a reinforcement of the tire design that extends the durable rubber
over the rim of the wheel,

... The all-terrain tires have rim protection, a reinforcement of the tire design that
extends the durable rubber over the rim of the wheel,

...; Improved rim protection
ridge protects

...Maximum Flange shield rim protection. ... ... Extra heavy duty sidewall fenders, give maximum sidewall and rim protection.
