Glen, nice to hear of your near completion of the WC12 and taking on the new obsession.
The use of lye is a easy and inexpensive method of removal of years of build-up of grease and oils packed with sand and dirts, as well as some paints.
Remember lye is a caustic works great to dissolve organic materials, (works similar to an acid on metals, it will eat any of that type of material it comes in contact with).
It will destroy cotton clothing, wood, as well as your skin, lungs, and may cause blinding of an eye if not protect from contact with.
The more concentrated the solution the faster it works, to an extent. (it just will have more potential to continue and more rapid.) But moisture (water) is needed to make the reaction to occur.
Water also is your friend, it will dilute and wash off the solution. Copious amounts recommended at clean-up.
It will change the pH of the soil where the water run-off goes. (lye is widely used in Ag. to bring soil pH to a level the intended crop prefers)
