The large worm gear is pressed onto the drum shaft so that the worm gear hub extends 1/8 beyond the key on each side. What keeps it from walking is the small worm gear on the worm shaft. It sounds as though parts are pretty worn, or something is bent, and out of alignment. Pay close attention the 1/8th space each side of the worm. If you don't have that much, the large worm needs replaced.
